Portico Quartet – Steepless – Tune Of The Day #025

January 31, 2012 by thelittlestmojo | 0 comments

We’ve been big fans of Portico Quartet and their spell binding soundscapes for a good while now. We first encountered them busking on the Southbank and it’s been great to see word of their music spread over the past few years.

This week sees the release of their third album the self titled ‘Portico Quartet‘ on Real World Records. The departure of founder member and Hang player Nick Mulvey to concentrate on his own musical journey (which we blogged about HERE) definitely sees PQ move into new territory.

Kier Vine has joined the ranks to maintain the ‘quartet’ status and the new album sees a real step beyond the sound that characterized the previous records, the results just as magical and captivating.

So here’s the enchanting Steepless, which features the delightful vocals of Swedish songstress Corneila. We hope it whets your appetite for what the new Portico Quartet album has to offer.

Mick Flannery – Boston – Tune Of The Day #024

January 28, 2012 by thelittlestmojo | 0 comments

Mick Flannery  is a County Cork man who started out as a Stone Mason. He now spends his days constructing songs, and mighty fine ones at that.

Boston‘ is a tender tale which caught our ears immediately when catching the Irishman live recently. The simplicity of the piano and vocal arrangement complement the captivating lyrics perfectly.

The song isn’t available yet but will feature on a brand new album coming soon, the follow up to Mick’s last record ‘White Lies‘ which was such a success in Ireland. You can feast your eyes and ears on a spell binding live performance of the ballad on this years Other Voices above.

Hopefully songs such as Boston will see 2012 take Mr Flannery’s music to a new set of ears beyond the shores of his native land.

Enjoy!

Radiohead – The Daily Mail – Tune Of The Day #023

January 22, 2012 by thelittlestmojo | 0 comments

For the past 20 years Radiohead have provided the soundtrack to many of our lives. Consistently engaging us, playing on our emotions and quite often dividing opinion.

The Daiy Mail is the bands latest offering, recorded as part of The King Of Limbs – From The Basement session. It’s three and a half enthralling minutes encompass a lamenting Bach-esque piano, Thoms impassioned vocals and on the rest of band arriving in exhilarating style with a host of horns in tow, a simply magical passage of music ensues.

Mr Yorke is always at his best when he has a bee in his bonnet about something, the title of the track would be pretty much explain who or what put that bee in there in this case! And extra marks for the use of the most excellent phrase ‘you made a pigs ear’.

Get your lugs on to The Daily Mail now and let us know what you think!
