Radiohead – The Daily Mail – Tune Of The Day #023

January 22, 2012 by thelittlestmojo | 0 comments

For the past 20 years Radiohead have provided the soundtrack to many of our lives. Consistently engaging us, playing on our emotions and quite often dividing opinion.

The Daiy Mail is the bands latest offering, recorded as part of The King Of Limbs – From The Basement session. It’s three and a half enthralling minutes encompass a lamenting Bach-esque piano, Thoms impassioned vocals and on the rest of band arriving in exhilarating style with a host of horns in tow, a simply magical passage of music ensues.

Mr Yorke is always at his best when he has a bee in his bonnet about something, the title of the track would be pretty much explain who or what put that bee in there in this case! And extra marks for the use of the most excellent phrase ‘you made a pigs ear’.

Get your lugs on to The Daily Mail now and let us know what you think!

Brooke Fraser – Something In The Water – Tune Of The Day #020

January 15, 2012 by thelittlestmojo | 1 Comment

Brooke Fraser ‘s ‘Something In the Water‘ is a gem of a tune that thankfully shone brightly through the musical sludge that is daytime radio over the past year.

The Kiwi songstress delivers a rousing vocal backed by a marvelous mob of male singers and a choir of claps giving the track a stirring depth. And it’s always good to hear a ‘doo doo doo’ and a spot of whistling!

So lend your ears to this beautifully crafted song, you’ll be pressing play again before you know it!

James Vincent McMorrow – Higher Love – Tune Of The Day #017

Today’s ‘Tune Of The Day’ is a bewitching cover of a classic Steve Winwood song performed by one of our favourite artists to emerge over the last 18 months, the hugely talented  James Vincent McMorrow. The stripped back performance featuring piano and James’ enchanting vocal is just beautiful.

Mr McMorrow, the lovely soul he is, originally recorded this stunning version of ‘Higher Love‘ as part of a campaign for Irish organisation headstrong.ie who do amazing work supporting young people’s mental health in Ireland. When Love Film asked to use the recording as the backdrop to their recent advert James kindly donated the resulting fee to Headstrong. Good on him!

If you haven’t already you must get your ears on to McMorrow’s debut album ‘Early In The Morning‘ which is simply stunning and is one of the best we’ve heard in a long while.

Imagine what Jeff Buckley & Nina Simone backed by the Fleet Foxes might have sounded like and it gives you a rough idea of how good this record is!

The Cure – Love Song – Classic Tune #003

The Cure provide us with today’s ‘Classic Tune‘. It’s one of the most darkly romantic songs of devotion and possibly obsession you are ever likely to hear.

From the opening chime of the first chord the men from Crawley, (where 2D from Gorillaz also comes from we’ll have you know!), seduce us with the sound that became so destinctively theirs. Melodic bass, peddeling guitars and a symphony of keys. At the forefront, Robert Smith‘s yearning vocals are simply stunning.

‘Love Song’ is much loved the world over and made the Billboard top 100 in the USA,  nearly as impressive as Smith’s hair do… well, not quite!!
